I have a special education teaching certificate for grades K through 12. I also worked as a special education manager/assistant principal for a K-4 school. Although I focused on special education, all students were placed in the general education curriculum, so I am familiar with both content and instructional methods for this age group.
I have a teaching certificate in Secondary English and have taught 7th and 8th grade English. I scored a perfect score on the Secondary English Praxis exam.
I have a teaching certification in both Secondary English and Special Education. As a learning specialist, I focused intently on literacy and designed individual interventions for decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.
I taught reading in a self-enclosed 7th grade classroom and taught 7th and 8th grade English and Test Prep Reading. More recently, I worked for a high performing, NYC-based charter network, primarily supporting special education in K-4. I have used reading programs such as Wilson Literacy and Leveled Literacy and am very familiar with F&P, the reading benchmark employed by most elementary schools. However, my strength as a tutor and teacher is my ability to pinpoint what a student needs and design a plan aimed at him or her as an individual (leveraging their strengths and giving the right support). This approach is beneficial for every child.
I have three years of experience teaching special education. In addition to having my teaching certificate in special education, I have my M.S. in Urban Education/Special Education from the University of Pennsylvania. More recently, I was the special education manager for a K-8 charter school based in NYC.
I have a brother with Down Syndrome and several years of experience working with children with special needs. In addition to intellectual disabilities, I have experience teaching and tutoring students with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language impairments, ASD, and other learning disabilities. I hold students to high expectations and push them to find success during every lesson. I understand differentiation to a high degree, knowing how to effectively break down information and deliver in multiple modalities.
As a middle school case manager and learning specialist, I directly supported students in improving their study skills. This includes, but is not limited to, organization, time management, schedules, and general study skills. With a special education background, I know many techniques for supporting attention, memory, recall, and fluency.
