Hi, this is Omar, your math tutor. Do not worry any more. I am here to help you get it. I have my undergraduate in math, an MS degree in statistics and just got a PhD in biostatistics in December 2012.
I have been a math tutor since high school. I helped students understand math concepts they could not understand. I did the same thing as an undergraduate student. When I was doing my MS degree in statistics at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, I worked as a TA in the Math Assistance Complex (MAC). I earned the reputation of being one of best tutors. Very often, students would book appointments to see me rather than hope to be randomly assigned to me. Because of my success at the MAC, I was hired as an instructor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department. There I always strove to be the kind of tutor/instructor who will make a positive difference in the performance and lives of my students. My strength in tutoring/teaching is that I can get my students from being very hopeless to being some of the best. I do this by first making them believe that they can do it. I motivate them to think on their own and solve problems. Sometimes, while helping a student, I will let them do it the way they think is right and then afterwards point out their mistakes to them and show them why what they were doing was wrong or not very efficient. I think it is a very powerful way because by the time I help them out they would have spent some time and thought out ways to solve the problem. It is better than giving them a hint from the start and interrupting their thought process. This is important because in the exam the student will not have anyone to start you off with a hint. And this method works!
Once, a student came to me with a problem that looked impossible to solve and, after letting her try, I broke it down for her and explained to her how to solve it. I gave her a general way to solve such problems and soon afterwards she was doing similar kinds of problems successfully on her own. At first she could not believe she was getting the correct answers until after she looked at the answers at the back of the book. This is the case of a student who came to me totally lost and I got her to a point where she was in complete control of the subject. This, I believe, is a strength that I have and I would want you to experience.
I am available to tutor students from elementary school through college.
