I have taught and tutored for more than ten years, working with students of a variety of different ages and backgrounds. I primarily work with students to help them improve pieces of analytical and expository writing as well as personal statements. Having taught writing and literature both at Columbia University, where I earned a PhD in English and Comparative Literature, and at an independent K-12 school, I am comfortable working with students of varying ages. I am also happy to help students with document editing; I have proofed documents as diverse as term papers, resumes, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations. In working with students and their writing I encourage rigorous and logical textual organization, dynamic revision, and considering research a craft rather than a chore; I aim to help students to determine what they want to express in their writing and how best and most clearly to convey those sentiments. As almost all of my teaching has taken place either in very small classroom environments or one-on-one, my pedagogical approach is highly personalized.
