I have 14 years of experience programming computers and designing software systems. I passed the NYU certificate program in Unix programming with an emphasis on C/C++ and Bourne shell. I also have experience with Perl, Python, and Java.
As a long-time computer software professional and "power user" of many programs and operating systems, I'm comfortable in Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux environments. I can help students learn how to navigate their computers, how to organize and back up information, how to get the most out of applications, and how to use the internet efficiently. Most important, I enjoy computing and sharing my discoveries with others.
Although I have not tutored anyone for the ISEE per se, I have covered its subject matter for the grade levels of the various tests: English reading and essay, math, and quantitative reasoning. Insofar as the test covers ground similar to that of the SSAT, I would be in my comfort zone. In addition, I have published test-prep materials and would follow those in designing a study program for each student, according to the time he or she had to prepare for the test.
I've been using Linux since before it was convenient to compile and run the kernel. I currently run Ubuntu Linux on my laptop computer. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of Linux and other Unix-like systems.
As a philosophy student, I'm familiar with many aspects of logic, both formal and informal. I enjoy teaching informal logic as a part of critical thinking, and I'm trained in symbolic logic. I received an A with credit in the University of Washington's distance course in first-order symbolic logic, which emphasized natural deduction proofs. In graduate school, I received an A+ in modal logic, which emphasized first-order modal proofs using semantic tableaux.
I have an M.M. (Master of Music) degree from the Juilliard School and considerable knowledge of music history, performance, and theory.
Part of my 14 years of experience in software development was spent designing and coding an online document delivery system for scholarly journals. Most of the code was written in Perl.
I'm a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy. Philosophy is as much a way of looking at things as it is an academic discipline. I believe that philosophy is for everyone, because studying it provides a set of critical thinking skills that can be applied to every other discipline and to life in general. That's why I enjoy introducing newcomers to the subject.
My mom was an English teacher who loved language, my dad a journalism professor. From the two of them, I acquired an interest in writing and editing. In college, I studied copy-editing with the late John Bremner, an expert in usage and grammar. I'm well-versed in English grammar, usage, and composition, and I enjoy the editing process.
I've successfully tutored in Regents chemistry, and I've studied materials for the Regents physics, algebra, and trigonometry exams, using both High Marks guides and NY magnet school course materials. Since the Regents program will be superseded by the Common Core Curriculum, I'll probably turn my attention to those requirements, but I'm hoping my Regents background will give me a head start on Common Core.
I received my M.M. from the Juilliard School in trumpet performance. I've performed with many ensembles in New York, including the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals and a musical approach to practice.
In addition to completing NYU's certificate program in Unix/C programming, I worked in a Unix environment for 14 years. I'm familiar with Unix filesystems, Linux, and Solaris, and with all the standard command-line tools, including sed, awk, Perl, and various shells. I also have worked as a system administrator.
