The ACT Science test evaluates scientific reasoning skills and comprehension. In graduate school (biology) I took a reading course individually with a professor, where you had to explain every diagram in a tall stack of scientific papers. Analyzing scientific information relies on understanding graphical representations of data, logic and critical thinking. I can explain the concepts clearly and help students spot key points and inconsistencies. I have 2 Master's degrees in Genetics, Molecular, Cell and Developmental biology, and did lab research for many years.
I have 2 Masters in biological sciences: Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology from CUNY, and Genetics from Yale, along with several semesters of undergraduate teaching at CUNY and 10 years of laboratory research on various topics including fruit fly genetics and evolutionary biology. I have experience tutoring high school and teaching and tutoring undergraduate biology.
As a native speaker of Dutch and with an undergraduate degree in Translation Studies (Dutch, English, Spanish, minor in French), I am uniquely qualified to tutor Dutch conversation, writing, grammar and usage. My graduate education in biological sciences may be useful for students seeking to focus on Dutch for scientific use.
Having grown up in Belgium and France speaking French with half my family and half my co-workers, and having taken French from elementary school to college, I am ready to help you with your French lessons. Grammar, vocabulary, spelling, fluency. Such a beautiful language, n'est-ce pas?
With a Master's in Genetics from Yale and one in Molecolar, Cell and Developmental Biology from CUNY, plus years of research in Drosophila genetics and genomics, I am well-equipped to help students with any topic in genetics. From basics such as pedigree analysis, Punnett squares, dominant/recessive alleles, to experimental design, gene mapping, recombination, gene regulation, genomics, transgenes, development, and population genetics.
I have an undergraduate degree in translation English and Spanish, and some of my current (non-tutoring) work requires me to use written and spoken Spanish on a daily basis. I am well-versed with vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. I explain everything simply and effectively so it will stick. Spanish is not my native language, so I have a good understanding of the difficulties that may be encountered by other non-native speakers. My other languages are English, Dutch, French and I have passive knowledge of a few more; I can relate Spanish to your own language.
I am experienced helping to write research papers (college, grad school, upper high school), and I can help you with organizing your thoughts and building up your argument in your papers: outline, introduction, methods & results (in the case of a research paper), literature review, discussion, abstract, and references. Plus, I can help you with sharpening up your prose, grammar and word choice, improving clarity, making the story flow, and making sure you leave no loose ends.
I am a biologist, but I have helped with papers in other fields including engineering and the social sciences. Because writing can take time, for a multi-hour assignment requiring only one car or subway trip, I take the price down. Email me for details. Thank you for your interest.
