I am an "outcome oriented" private tutor who is receptive to client feedback and is successfully working with third and fourth grade students on New York State Test preparation; ESL students on their English writing and speaking skills; and college students on research, papers, and presentations.
Just prior to becoming a private tutor, I worked in a charter school where I helped elementary level students improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and spelling. I also helped them to sharpen their math skills, including addition, subtraction, and fractions, and with such applied mathematical concepts as symbols, telling time, and making change.
My previous work experience also includes over 20 years with a large life insurance company where I was a writer, editor, and educator in various departments including customer service and compliance. My work for the company always involved writing clear and concise communication--memos, procedural guides, letters, emails and bulletins—as well as explaining complex financial products to clients and multifaceted procedures and concepts to staff.
I go about my work gently, with lots of patience, sympathy and a sense of humor. I believe that my role is not only that of a tutor, but of a mentor who stimulates and engages her students. For all of these reasons, I believe I am able to see solid improvements in my students. I encourage the use of materials with repetitive exercises to help students remember what they are reading, spelling, computing, etc., and engage them in conversations so that they can be encouraged to use correct English. I like to ask questions to make sure that a student has grasped the material.
When my students' responses are corrected/reviewed, any incorrect answers are discussed and reworked. I encourage students to work out solutions for themselves as much as possible and relish seeing work completed independently.
