I specialize in tutoring those who need help with: 1) Persuasive Writing, 2) Active Reading, 3) Critical Thinking, 4) Proofing/Editing 5) Admissions Guidance (particularly personal statements), and 6) Verbal/Writing Generalized Test Preparation.
I am a doctoral student living in Manhattan conducting research and writing my dissertation. While I currently spend most of my day reading and writing, I very much enjoy and miss working with students of all ages. Tutoring will give me a chance to follow this passion, and also provide me with a needed break from my academic work. I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania where I earned my Masters degree in 2008. I have a considerable amount of experience helping students hone their critical thinking and writing skills.
I have served as both a TA and Graduate Mentor. In addition to my general experience with teaching (I've taught Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Methods, Media & Popular Culture, and Africa & the World at Penn) and writing (I have two published articles to my name), I also have specific experience guiding students through the college application process. During my undergraduate training at Cornell University, where I graduated with Magna Cum Luade, I tutored for an organization that offers SAT & College Guidance to high school students.
My main interest is to work with students who need guidance in applying to college (particularly college essay writing) as well as with those who need help mastering their writing, reading and comprehension skills. I am well qualified to work with students who need help in the following subjects: English, Social Studies, History, and Writing.
Though I am getting my PhD in Sociology, my undergraduate major was through an independent studies program at Cornell and I took most of my classes in Literature and History along with Social Science. While I would prefer to work with students who live in Manhattan, I am flexible about working in other boroughs if there is interest. Feel free to email me if you think I may be able to help you. I look forward to hearing from you.
