Writing Tutor- English Major from Cornell University

Hello, my name is Kara, a 24-year old former student from Cornell University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in 2010 in English Literature, and also minored in Italian Studies. I graduated with a GPA of 3.70 / 4 and made Dean’s list for most of my semesters there.

My goal with every student is to help each go beyond his/her idea of personal potential in terms of fluency, clarity, organization, analysis and argument building. I encourage every writer to focus more on developing his/her strengths, and through this growth, learn to avoid bad habits and weak writing.

From 2008-2010 I was a writing tutor with the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines at Cornell University. I actively attended all sessions of a research-oriented writing seminar and tutored three individual students from the class on a bi-weekly basis. Throughout the course of the semester, I helped each student from brainstorming to research methods, thesis building, organization, drafting, revising and the final, finished product.

Throughout my time in college I also tutored local Ithaca High School students in various subjects, such as History, Math and English. We spent our time on specific homework assignments and understanding methods, content and how to prepare for future exams.

Reading

As a former English Literature student at Cornell University and Italian Studies minor, I have done a considerable amount of reading, critical thinking and analysis related to the reading. I have also taken the LSAT and worked at a corporate law firm, both of which required vast amounts of efficient and effective reading.

Writing

Having studied English and Italian literature at Cornell University, I have comprehensive experience and a working knowledge of formal and informal writing in both English and Italian.

I also worked extensively with the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines while at Cornell, and served as both a teaching assistant and individual mentor in a writing seminar specifically geared toward students needing improvement with academic writing.

Literature

In 2010, I received my BA from Cornell University in English Literature and a minor in Italian studies. I was on the Dean's List almost every semester and tutored students through the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines. I attended Edgemont Jr / Sr High School and took AP English Literature, among the other 8 AP courses and exams I completed during my time.

Proofreading

As a former tutor at Cornell University with the John S. Knight Institute for writing in the disciplines, one of my main functions was to proofread students' essays, abstracts, drafts and final papers. My job at a corporate law firm also has taught me to keep a very sharp eye on grammatical errors and anything which could compromise meaning.
