Hi! My name is Carla. I am an experienced teacher, tutor and admissions counselor. I have worked with children and families for nearly twenty years. I have been a classroom teacher in independent and public schools in New York City. Currently, I work individually with children and families. My areas of expertise are prek-4 academics, gifted and talented enrichment and test preparation. I tutor for the OLSAT (public school gifted and talented entrance exam), ERB (ISAAGNY entrance exam), and ELA (public school progress exam). Phonics is the basis of reading. While there are many skills involved in reading, the sound-symbol correspondence is the most important. Phonics builds on a child's innate facility for language. Phonics must be combined with other methods of reading instruction, including whole language.

Reading comprehension and active reading are areas of expertise.

Special Needs

I have experience working with children who have writing issues, dyslexia, or weak pencil grip. Language development and socialization are also areas of expertise.
