As an enthusiastic and dedicated educator, I believe active engagement in the classroom is central to student achievement. Using cooperative learning, project-based performance assessments, and simulations I endeavor to create an enriching and challenging environment in which all learners attain their highest level of academic success. I achieved a 100% passing rate on the June 2011 and June 2012 Global History Exam, while district-wide the rate was 29% and citywide the passing rate was 54%. In both of my previous schools I also created Model United Nations programs that enabled the students to earn outstanding diplomacy awards each year.
I am confident that my teaching experiences along with my dual certification in TESOL and Social Studies will make me a perfect fit for your tutoring needs. For the past two years I served as a Social Studies teacher at Harlem Village Academies High School in East Harlem. Before that, I spent three years teaching ESL and Social Studies in a New York City public school in Washington Heights. My teaching career began seven years ago in Italy as an ESL and EFL teacher in various classroom settings with students of all ages and all language levels. I have taught elementary school, middle school, high school, and at the university level. In each setting, I developed strategies for motivating students, managing a classroom, using data to drive instruction, and collaborating with parents. I have also served as an after school tutor to many of my students in each of these school settings.
Although the motivations and background knowledge bases may vary from group to group, all students benefit when they are presented with engaging lessons, clear expectations and when they feel comfortable in the learning environment. To this end, I employ the workshop model of instruction, in which students are introduced to small parcels of content in an engaging lesson and then are given a student-centered activity employing what they have learned in an authentic situation. My students have created plays, debates, trials, games, commercials, blogs and historical simulations that not only helped retain content long term but also enabled them to learn from each other in a cooperative setting and apply concrete knowledge to real life situations.
I find that setting and maintaining clear expectations is at the foundation of student achievement. From the moment students begin the tutoring session, I commend positive behavior through consistent verbal confirmation and present a tangible system from which students can set goals and track their own progress. My goal as educator is to foster a motivating, communicative and supportive tutoring experience in which each student feels secure, challenged and determined to reach his or her greatest potential.
