English Teacher w Masters in 1-6 Education from Teachers College

Hello!

I am an English teacher at a private high school, and I am looking for a summer tutoring opportunity. I am currently finishing up my fifth year of teaching. Previously, I taught 7th grade English for three years. Also, I attended Columbia's Teachers College and attained a Master's in 1-6 Education.

My strengths lie in teaching reading/writing skills and creative lesson planning. I feel prepared to assist students of any age; I have spent a lot of time working with kids of different ages and skill levels. (While in my program at Columbia, I student taught in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade classrooms, and last summer I tutored two 3rd graders.)

Study Skills

I think it is incredibly important to teach children HOW to study different subjects. You may study for some subjects in similar ways, or it may be better to use distinct tactics at certain times. For example, I think it can always be a great idea to make flash cards for a certain topic. A graphic organizer, however, may be more useful when studying for history than for English.

Public Speaking

I have always been a public speaker, but I have not always been good at it. In high school, I joined student council and needed to speak in front of classmates quite frequently. I remember my nervousness at the time, but I honed my skills throughout college and am now an avid public speaker, seeing as I speak publicly every day as a teacher!
