Hello, welcome, nice to meet you! I look forward to working with you.
I am a professional, New York City based, freelance oboist with experience playing concerti, solo recitals, chamber music, orchestral music, operas, Broadway musicals, and contemporary music. I have studied with Bert Lucarelli (International soloist), Ray Still (Chicago Symphony), Nathan Hughes (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), and Jonathan Blumenfeld (Philadelphia Orchestra).
For my undergraduate degree, I was admitted to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a Composition major and while there studied conducting with Robert Spano (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) and Louis Lane (Cleveland Symphony). After Oberlin, I moved to Philadelphia and studied ear training privately with Jonathan Coopersmith (Head of the Aural Skills/Theory Department at the Curtis Institute), Sarah Hicks (Curtis Institute) and Chris Stone (Aural Skills faculty, Mannes College of Music). I was later admitted to NYU – Steinhardt, to the oboe studio of Bert Lucarelli, for my Master’s Degree in Oboe Performance. At both institutions, I was able to pass out of the history and general music exams. At NYU, I was the theory/aural skills/history tutor.
Between my undergraduate and graduate degrees I spent nearly eight years teaching oboe, music theory, aural skills and music history at many community music schools. I was the conductor of the Trappe Chamber Players, and the Greater Philadelphia Honors Orchestra and was chamber music coach at the Crescendo Music Camp for several years I have given master classes and workshops relating to the oboe and freelanced as an oboist in the greater Philadelphia area.
My method of teaching is grounded in the fundamentals, whether we are speaking of playing the oboe, learning theory, history, composition or aural skills. You will learn the techniques necessary to give you the confidence to succeed. I generally ask guided questions so that the learning process comes mostly from within you. I feel this way creates stronger, more capable students who are able to reason out solutions when their tutors cannot be around. Each lesson is tailored to your specific needs; whether it is general improvement, audition/performance preparation, paper writing or general homework.
I am very pleasant and patient. No skill level is turned away; we all have to start somewhere! If you have any question before you start, feel free to ask.
