Hi all,
I am a very hard-working and diligent teacher who is skilled at discovering and understanding student learning problems and in helping students to sharpen their study skills by teaching them to apply specific strategies.
I can travel if need be but I can also tutor online-discounted prices would usually apply-and I can also meet students and parents at Manhattan libraries, such meetings also available for discount off my published prices.
As a professional writer, English teacher, reading/writing teacher and literacy specialist, I am able to quickly diagnose student reading and writing problems and set them on their way toward adopting more efficient learning styles. Modeling is a very important aspect of my teaching. I show how to do something, then guide the student in doing it, then let the student do it herself. It's basically the strategy of: "I do, you watch. You do, I watch. You do." I am results orientated and I engage every student in setting goals and guide them toward achieving them.
I have taught all levels from k-12 in Manhattan over my 13-year teaching career. I have two daughters who excel in their high school work. I also am tutoring a Columbia University graduate student in the English language and have taught ESL (I am not certified in ESL though) in various NYC high schools. My certification is in English but I also have taught quite a lot of history courses. Additionally, I can teach most subjects from k-8.
I received my BA in English and in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts, my MA in Literacy (teaching degree) from Touro College in Manhattan and had course work at Harvard University and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
As a journalist, I wrote news copy for 12 years before my teaching career and ten of them were spent specializing in court news for about 30 Boston-area news organizations.
My students in the city like working with me because they know I am extremely persistent, firm when I need to be and I demand results and get them. This earns their respect.
I hope you will give me a try.
Best,
Gary
