I have had a well rounded life which has taken me to many countries. I appreciate the variety of ways that different cultures approach their studies as well as their values, which can affect the choice of study.
I like to help make material as relevant as possible to my student's life, so that they are fully engaged and can understand how learning is personally important. When tutoring English to a Japanese business woman whose business was textiles, we studied fashion magazines and talked endlessly about color and fabric as well as the different styles of doing business. She found our work extremely helpful because she could put it right back into her everyday life.
I have worked as a copywriter and editor and have a strong understanding of how writing can work and influence. Two of my essays were published this year in local newspapers and started a campaign based on the subjects I had chosen. I am passionate about what I do.
Having also made films and painting, I can help a student explore create blocks and get them on their feet with project material. It's not only the subject that must be understood in these cases, but how to work with a group. I can help the student identify his or hers strongest skills.
If it's a history lesson we're working on, I will bring additional material to class to help illuminate the subject for my student as well as current events which I think might show how modern history actually is!
