I am a Computer Science and Engineering graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. I tutor because teaching is my passion. I started tutoring in high school, and continued in college and beyond.

I have helped a ninth grader take a 60 average at midterm to the upper 90's by the middle of the second term. My style is to use multiple techniques to explain concepts which are not evident to the student.

I have worked with students who are differently-abled, and have gained from this experience.

I passed the PhD prelims as a junior and was a researcher at MIT, and taught at University of Delaware and Penn.

American History

I studied American Civilization (as a minor) at the University of Pennsylvania. I took six graduate level courses describing how the cities in the northeast grew from 1680 to 1880. For four years I was a volunteer historical interpreter for the US National Park Service at Independence Historical National Park.

Physical Science

I have worked on a number of projects since graduation which demonstrate the value of physics, and enjoy sharing with students examples of how the theory they are learning will be used in the real world. I have practiced engineering for over twenty years, and found myself teaching co-workers examples from my physics texts in building robots and other vehicles.

C++

As a Computer Science major, I have been programming in C++ since the late 80's. I have used C++ to write trading systems and data mining systems for medical research. In the past year I have written over 200,000 lines of C/C++.

Biostatistics

Since 1992 I have worked in medical research. I have taught bioinformatics and biostatistics to medical students, postdocs and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. I am currently teaching data science to life science graduate students in New York, NY, focusing on biostatistics.

As a Computer Science major, I have been programming in C since the early 80's. I have used C to write modules in kernels, real-time systems, and large applications. In the past year I have written over 100,000 lines of C.

I have taught software engineering and network design at 3 universities. I was on the team that won the 2009 Postel Award. I have taught distributed computing at seminars in the US and Europe.

I have worked in FORTRAN since college, programming engineering equations and numerical methods. I have used many of the third-party libraries, and tools to enhance the programming environment. I also worked on the FORTRAN compiler in Research and Development at Digital Equipment Corporation.

Genetics

I taught molecular evolution and computation biology for seven years at the Marine Biological Laboratory, funded by NIH. My work included combining all of the alignment tools to make the sum better than the sum of the parts. I have also attended and taught medical school which provides me many views into how the subject is taught, and what material should be addressed.

Linux

I am a Computer Science and Engineering graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. I have been a user and kernel developer of Linux since the early 1990's. I have written large systems to run on conventional boxes, and also worked with small devices using an embedded system on firmware.

Perl

I have written in Perl since version 3, and have used all of the succeeding versions. Used it for infrastructure projects, database manipulations, and data science. Was lucky to have Mark Jason Dominus teach regular expressions when we were both at Penn.

UNIX

I have used UNIX since the 1980's, first at Digital Equipment Corporation in R&D, and then to build two nationwide store and forward networks for electronic mail. I have written many different type of programs to run on UNIX, including a software development environment.

Electrical Engineering

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. I have wired entire buildings for networking at the beginning of the Internet, helped build an undersea robot, and many other practical uses of academic principles. I have taught engineering at three schools. I have taught EE concepts as well to medical students and business systems students.
