I have had the opportunity to tutor pre algebra, algebra, and all levels of economics. I tutored at the Lower East Side Girls Club as well as in private homes in N.J. and at one University I attended.

I loved getting to know the students and making them realize that they had many hidden talents and skills. They just needed to work on the subject matter a bit to discover how they could succeed in multiple subjects. The younger ones were quite successful completing the fourth grade math test. The older ones passed the regents exams.

Some students work better using online systems but most prefer the one on one experience. These students are more comfortable asking a person a question on a face to face basis. There are two online systems which I have used with students. The younger ones need a more colorful or entertaining on line experience. The older students prefer a You Tube experience with the ability to ask questions about the content with someone who can answer their questions in a respectful manner.

I have worked with students from many backgrounds. Some of these students did not have English as their primary language. We were able to work together and complete the semesters successfully. I also helped them with English pronunciation and grammar.

I enjoy interacting with people and motivating them to become more informed and more accomplished individuals.

Vocabulary

I love to read and have been fortunate enough to have been raised in a household where English was routinely spoken most of the time.

I have had sucess tutoring students whose parents only spoke Spanish. We used flashcards a lot. More importantly, we used a word in a simple sentence and then a more complex sentence. This emphasis on the practical use of vocabulary was more effective than straight memorization.

Prealgebra

I was a tutor at the lower East side Girls club. I assisted the girls with homework. The majority were in 3rd grade through high school. I tutored them in all subjects up to eighth grade. The high school students needed some assistance in algebra, english composition and science. I was there to help them with their homework. They became successful students.

Reading

I beleive many students try to rush to finish a reading comprehension test. Often I have found that making them focus at a slightly slower pace will get them to an improved level of comprehnsion.

I then try to ask questions gently and encourage them. The one on one attention plus encouragement has helped several students get on to the right track to learning at the level of their peer group and beyond.

English

I was born on the East coast. English vocabulary is a subject which I love. It is fun to learn new words. I love literature and have assisted students from age 8 until high school with their English homework. They all passed the regents exam.

Economics

I taught government and business at a University. I have also tutored high school students in basic economics. My undergraduate degree is in political economy or economics with a bent towards international economics and macroeconomics. My MBA is in finance. I love helping students discover how relevant economics is to the world at large.

Elementary Math

I like to teach elementary math by giving real life examples and instances where a person could use this information.

I also encourage students to ask questions to determine the source of their concerns about a subject. Many times they know more than they realize. Once that is pointed out to a student they feel more comfortable trying to solve the problems from their homework.
