I went to Penn and definitely understand the constraints and competition that students deal with consistently. Everyone wants that tiny bit of help to keep them in the running or to hopefully stand out. Tutoring definitely helps, but outside of making sure your tutor is suitable, responsible, and good on paper -- you need a tutor who makes understanding your student's learning style their *utmost* priority. This is the basis of my teaching philosophy: customized learning. From the first lesson on, we will discuss your student's learning style, challenges, and goals; and then devise a curriculum that incorporates these factors into a learning plan from which your student will derive the most value.
About me: for the past 12+ years, I've been tutoring secondary school students, in the NYC area, and for the past 4 years as an educational consultant in Frankfurt, Germany. From 2004-2008, I also co-founded and ran a bicultural children's educational nonprofit based in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Bottom line: I absolutely LOVE to teach. And I really think that loving what you do matters -- this enthusiasm is sometimes the extra boost that matters, to get the material off the page and committed to our minds. The many students I've worked with, along with their parents, would heartily recommend me; I can definitely provide recommendations and referrals.
