I am a native Chinese studying at Columbia University, pursuing Master of Public Administration in Development Practice. I have obtained a Master’s degree in Chinese Linguistics and Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
During my study, I have taught Chinese as a second language at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in China and have tutored foreign students on Chinese for a year, volunteered to teach migrant workers’ children English as a second language in classroom set. I have also tutored middle school students English and Math.
Expertise:
Mandarin Chinese: I can clearly explain the usage and grammar of Chinese and teach student how to understand the cognitive logic behind language phenomena so to learn a language quickly. Language is the window to a culture, and it can’t be mastered without understanding the culture, and I always try to give cultural insight of the language to help student understand and remember.
Basic and intermediate math: algebra 1/2, geometry, pre-calculus. I can also help prepare for GRE quantitative section. I can clearly explain complex concepts and like to use exercise to strengthen the understanding of concepts and techniques learned.
I tutor in an interactive manner that I always encourage the student to take initiative and try to understand the way they process problems so to point out critical mistakes and help avoid similar mistakes in different situations.
I am easy-going and patient. I like to build up friendship with my students so to have a pleasant learning experience. In my free time, I like swimming, visiting museums, reading, and watching movies.
