The joy of teaching and at the same time learning with the individual student is a reward to me. I have taught since I left college when I worked in the New York City school system with students with learning disabilities. I learned how to help to relax the student and with tools such as flash cards, outside related stories, and creative repetition, to bring the material to life and see the light dawning in their eyes. "I got it", I heard over and over and the joy of mastering the mystery of the learning assignment was so memorable for both the student and for me. I continued to work with students who were K through 8 with The Central Park Conservancy Derek Jeter program in Crown Heights and later as a Social Worker with Fountain House, a clubhouse model for people with mental illness, my skills were tested on another level, but the reward of seeing the dawning of understanding remained my bonus despite the challenge. My technique is to meet the student where he or she is at and using their school books and lessons begin to peel the onion until the material makes sense and is within their grasp. I bring tools to help clarify the lessons such as alphabet blocks to spell difficult words and pictures, magazines and art materials to work with while we are describing something that will bring the word/s to reality.
I am currently working as a tutor in another capacity and have worked with Japanese and Russian speaking clients on conversational English. This involves grammar, pronunciation and definitions of the words. I have also been an Adjunct Professor at The New School address graduate students who were from all over the world.
My desire to work again with young people whose need to master their school assignments is great, and I look forward to meeting a student and exploring together the school subjects.
