I am a graduate student working towards a master's in Mathematics and was hired by my graduate college to be an Adjunct Professor and teach an undergraduate college math course. During my undergraduate studies, I spent 3 years tutoring peer students on behalf of the university. Subjects I tutored included Calculus, pre-Calculus, Algebra, and basic Probability and Statistics. I will continue to work with students in these subjects as well as Calculus II, geometry, trigonometry, and SAT/ACT Math. I was hired as a tutor by Varsity Tutors, Kaplan Test Prep, and Princeton Review, although I turned down some of the offers. Calculus is my favorite, and what I believe to be my most effective, course to tutor.
Students I have worked with have:
-Been accepted into ivy league colleges and top private high schools
-Scored an 800 on the Math Section of the SAT and an 800 on the Math SAT II Subject Test
-Excelled in Honors and AP Math courses and always passed their AP Statistics and AB or BC Calculus Exams
-Received an A in a variety of math courses
-Always saw rapid and substantial improvement in their math ability
-Gained more confidence and enjoyed math more
I find the best method is having the student attempt the math problems on their own rather than just watch the problems being solved as they might in a classroom. This will force the student to know each step and allow me to identify where the student gets stuck. It can be extremely helpful to work through practice review questions or previous exam questions and identify each problem into a category or type. Learning how to look at a problem and immediately know what "type" of problem it is and how to solve that "type" will give the student more confidence when working on their own and prevent panicking that can occur during an in-class exam.
