My name is Sara and I'm here to teach you piano! I am currently a graduate student at Manhattan School of Music, where I also did my undergraduate studies. I major in Classical piano performance, and I speak both English and Korean fluently!
I've been teaching piano since my high school years, both privately and in a school system. I specialize in classical piano music, but I've been exposed to, and take a great interest in all genres of music. The majority of my teaching experience has been with children and adolescents, but I'm comfortable working with any age group(primarily ages 5 and up). I am very patient, motivational, energetic, challenging, and encouraging with any student who would like to cooperate. I'm very laid back and comfortable if you want me to be, but I can also be strict. It's your call as a student!
I believe in positive reinforcement in my own way so that the students will not be discouraged but rather be more motivated by the rewarding improvement and the various prizes that I provide! Not one student is the same and I will adapt to each student and engage with them differently to reach the maximum of the individual. I think of piano lessons as a process of making beautiful music together; as everyone learns differently, it helps a great deal to get feedbacks from students, and we will work our ways together. It shouldn't be something that is forced by anyone, because music-making is all about fun.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Classical Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music where I'm currently studying with Jeffery Cohen. My primary piano teachers have been Frank Levy, Yuri Kim, Oxana Yablonskaya, and Jeffrey Cohen. Other piano studies and intensive lessons have been with Richard Shirk, Herbert Stessin and Seymour Bernstein.
I have appeared in recitals and concerts in the United States, Spain, South Korea, Italy, and Mexico. I've also won many prizes in solo piano competitions, including 1st prize in the Ruth Slenczynska Competition in Madison, New Jersey (2005), Honorable Mention as a Finalist in the Steinway Society Competition in New York City (2006), and 1st prizes in the Piano Teacher’s Society of America Competition in New York City (2005, 2006) which let me perform 2 years in a row at the Weill Recital Hall at the Carnegie Hall, NYC. I also have participated in many music festivals, including Puigcerda International Music Festival, Casalmaggiore International Music Festival, and Academie Internationale de Courchevel, and performed in masterclasses and various recitals.
I have a piano if you don't have one, so there's nothing to worry about.
I look forward to hear from you!
