I have been tutoring private school kids in New York for over 11 years, on and off. I specialize in all types of history, Geography and current event type classes (which seem to be popular at Riverdale these days). I have helped students take and pass A.P. American and European Classes, which gets them college credits. Most students I help with history SAT II's score within the 700's, I have not helped a student with SAT II's in a while and think the scoring system has changed but when I was doing it 800 was the highest you could get. I believe my students are successful because I just don't teach them the who, what and when but really concentrate on the "Why." When you concentrate on the "Why" in history, all of the other things fall into place. When students begin to grasp the "Why," it quickly becomes obvious of who the players were, and what was motivating their actions. I like timelines, not that exact dates are important, but seeing the progression of when things happened allows for students to understand why they happened. That is what history is about.
I have never had a student not improve his or her grades after hiring me and, for what it is worth, I think many of them actually become interested in history after a couple of months of sessions with me.
I am currently in my final year of Law School, and I volunteer and give tours of Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan Museum of art, (If I can make a connection I like to take students to a local museum or the library so they can actually see something pertaining to what they are studying). I am free everyday of the week except for Tuesdays and during the day on Thursdays because of Law School classes.
