SAT & ACT
Why spend hours and hours reading through the College Board’s Official SAT Study Guide or the ACT’s Real Prep Guide on your own, when you can have a tutor who’s done that and more guide you through the process and help you focus on what will be most important to improving your score?
I like helping students prepare for these tests because I know how to study for them, and how to explain the test makers' logic. I scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT in high school (760 Writing, 740 Math, 740 Critical Reading [2240 Total]), successfully completed 8 AP classes (European History, US History, English Language, English Literature, US Government, Comparative Government, Biology, and Macroeconomics), and taught the SAT & ACT for Kaplan before joining WyzAnt.
In addition to my own set of proprietary lesson materials, I have reams and reams of practice exercises, worksheets, quizzes and practice tests, that - rather than having to sift through yourself - I structure for you to help you get the most out of your studies.
As far as I know, the only other tutors who provide a similarly comprehensive course charge anywhere from 50 percent to 100 percent more than I do.
I can provide referrals and/or a course syllabus upon request.
ACADEMIC TUTORING
Whether you need help learning the content of a given subject, help developing better study skills, or both, I will work with you to develop the skills you need to achieve the grade you want.
Most of my academic tutoring is in high school math -- particularly Algebra and Precalculus -- and I've found that students' current problems often have their origin in misunderstandings or gaps from previous years. I will work with you to quickly catch up and get on the path to success in your class. If you put in the effort, I can help you excel.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I am a big believer in “hands-on” learning, in which the instructor regularly elicits responses from the student to ensure s/he understands the concepts being discussed and is actively involved in absorbing the material. I think mistakes are great as I see them as learning opportunities, so I always try to create an environment in which my students feel comfortable answering questions, even when they are unsure of the correct response.
I pride myself on being able to deliver results. If you are not completely satisfied with my tutoring on any occasion, I will not bill for that lesson. Your satisfaction is my number one goal!
MY BIO
I majored in Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I completed my degree in three years. After graduating I moved to New York and worked in finance for about 2 years. An illness in my family caused me to move back to California in early 2011, where I ended up getting a job teaching the SAT and ACT for Kaplan. I had tutored part-time while I was in college and really enjoyed helping students become more successful in their academic pursuits; so tutoring full-time turned out to be a great fit. I guess I had the opposite experience of the guys who wrote “I left my heart in San Francisco,” though, as I loved living in New York and really wanted to move back. The opportunity to do so eventually came, and I moved back in October 2012.
*NEW* REFERRAL POLICY
To encourage referrals and incentivize word-of-mouth, I've started to offer free lessons to students who refer new students. If you refer a new student, you will receive your next lesson completely free of charge.
