I've been a tutor for seven years, and my areas of expertise are literature, writing, study skills, and time management. As someone earning a doctorate in English literature and teaching Freshman Rhetoric/Composition courses, I consider critical thinking skills to be the cornerstone of education. I have helped a range of high-school and college students become more attentive readers and stronger writers. Specifically, I'm qualified to help students in the following areas: literature, writing, reading comprehension, note taking, study skills, time management, test prep(reading/writing SAT and verbal GRE), and college application essays/grad school personal statements.
I've worked with many students who have learning disabilities (i.e. reading processing disorders, dyslexia), ADD/ADHD, and Asperger's. I'm patient and compassionate. Moreover, I understand that students have multiple learning styles. Based on my experiences with individual students, I adapt my teaching style in ways that will help them learn and develop confidence academically. In many ways, I consider myself to be a study coach, who helps students develop good study habits and organizational skills, often by combating test anxiety or writer's block.
In addition to private tutoring, I've worked in two university Writing Centers and at a Learning Disabilities program at a private liberal arts university. These positions make me uniquely qualified to guide students through all stages of the writing process and challenge them to think critically as they approach their assignments. I'm sensitive to each of my students' individual learning needs. I feel particularly skilled at assessing the strengths and challenges my students face, and I work diligently to help them achieve their goals.
In sessions, many of my students have benefited from close-reading their assignments together, focusing on comprehension-related matters involving vocabulary, tone, and meaning, before moving on to bigger critical thinking questions. With longer reading assignments, I help them hone in on key information so that they can digest the material more easily. With writing assignments, I work with students on outlines, drafts, and edits of their essay assignments. I emphasize that writing is a process and guide them through various concerns, such as grammar, structure, logic, and diction as they write. Most importantly, we discuss their ideas and questions throughout the writing process. I like to model examples of effective writing, but the student's ideas and unique style always remain at the center of every dialogue.
I'm a very patient tutor and I've helped students manage their coursework more independently and develop interest in the material. First and foremost, I want them to learn and develop through our work together. Please contact me with any questions.
