I have taught ESL in several well-regarded universities in NYC and taught abroad as well. I have a teaching certificate in ESL from an institute in Madrid, Spain, where I was selected from a wide list of candidates for a two-year work-study scholarship. I lived there for almost eight years and consider myself almost fluent in Spanish. I teach academic writing, grammar, punctuation, pronunciation, vocabulary and conversation, as well as proofreading skills. I have taught students from all backgrounds and nations, from middle-school age to senior citizens. I am patient, creative, have a good sense of humor and try to make the lessons interesting and relevant. I have created hundreds of lesson plans and dialogues using grammar, literature, vocabulary and pronunciation, based on the Rassias Method (an interactive acting-based method of teaching a second language), in which I am certified.
I am also a three-time award-winning journalist (NY Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, 2007 and 2011) and freelance as an editor, proofreader and fact-checker. So with me you get the entire package of English-language skills and knowledge, honed over more than 25 years in the field. I not only teach, but also practice what I teach.
And just to round out my skills, I am a photographer and have been in many group shows in the Downtown area. I also sell limited edition notecards of my original photography, perfect for all occasions.
