I have been a fashionista since I was 14. That is when I started sewing and I am now 60.
I have been taking sewing classes since high school and I studied fashion design at Los Angeles Trade and Technical College between 2005 and 2009. It is here where I learned the unit method of garment construction. Each garment section is treated as a unit to be completed to the greatest extent possible before being attached to other garment sections.
When students are more eager to start making clothes for themselves right away, I generally like to start them with the commercial pattern of their choice and from this pattern they will learn how to take measurements, alter the pattern to fit themselves, how to choose fabrics, cutting, and garment construction.
From that pattern I will demonstrate samples(seams, collars, buttons and buttonholes) and the student will in turn do the samples on their own after I demonstrate how to use the sewing machine properly and safely.
I taught as a substitute teacher in the Pinellas County (FL) and the Atlanta school systems. I passed the C-Best test in California to substitute teach. I am a hand-crochet designer who is looking to launch my hats in the stores this winter season.
