I am a musician, composer and educator with experience teaching music theory, music history, choir and band, composition/song-writing, and piano. I specialize in musical theatre but also have a solid training from Harvard College in Western classical music and other genres. I hold an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing (music composition) from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

I use progressive, student-centered and experiential teaching methods and am highly adaptable to the needs of children and adults of a variety of different musical backgrounds.

Composition (Music)

I studied composition as an undergraduate at Harvard college, and have continued primarily in the area of musical theatre song-writing. I received my MFA in Musical Theatre Writing (as a composer) at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. I have taught composition and song-writing in a wide variety of styles.

Ear Training

I had a rigorous training in ear training at Harvard College, however I have always had a strength in this area, possessing perfect pitch.

I greatly enjoy teaching ear-training to music student in all areas, especially singers, and have successfully taught ear-training skills to students as young as 6 years old. (Although of course reaching a much higher level with older students.)

I can teach melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ear-training with equal skill.

General Music

My undergraduate degree in music from Harvard College covered music theory, history and composition.

I have taught general music to 1st through 10th grade students. I am experienced with the IB MYP and DP programs.

My orientation toward teaching general music is discovery-centered and progressive.

Music History

My undergraduate degree in music included a rigorous training in Western classical music history. I have also taught music history through the IB Diploma Program in music. In addition, I have taken courses in and taught world music topics.

Piano

I consider myself a progressive and non-traditional piano teacher. I work best with intermediate to advanced students, older beginners, and students with interest in both "classical" and more popular repertoire. I also like to include composition, theory and ear-training as a component of piano studies.

Sight Singing

I love teaching sight-singing. I have enjoyed participating in and conducting choral music for many years and have always been an excellent sight-singer. My music training involved advanced sight-singing (chromatic and atonal music) and I include sight-singing training in all of my vocal music classes.

Songwriting

Song-writing for musical theatre is one of my deepest passions. I received my MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, and previously participated in the New Opera and Musical Theatre Initiative (a musical theatre writers' workshop in the Boston area) and in the BMI workshop in New York. I have taught songwriting courses to teens with great success in genres of their choice.
