I work with children and adults who are learning English, struggling with reading and writing and/or who have language-based learning differences like dyslexia. Some of the specific issues we can work on together are: phonemic awareness, vocabulary, learning to read (children including adults), fluency, comprehension, written composition and handwriting. I also work with children and adults who are feeling frustrated due to time management issues.

I have studied communicative disorders and multisensory language education. Multisensory teaching is not a scripted program, but rather a way to teach. We learn using our eyes, ears, and fingers and this works for all levels and ages because lessons are customized. Your individualized sessions will progress as quickly as you can and as slowly as you need to.

A free 15-minute phone consultation is advised so we can discuss your needs and schedule a mutually convenient time. Regular sessions are 45 to 60 minutes in length, depending upon the age of the student and whether parental consultation is needed.

Writing

Writing can be a daunting task for many. I use a multisensory teaching approach to guide students through the writing process. We begin with a barebones sentence and will proceed through the various stages of writing.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have extensive experience teaching a variety of subjects to children in elementary school: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and learning skills. I tap into all of the different ways that children acquire new concepts and ideas through direct, explicit instruction that is multisensory, fun, individualized, and emotionally supportive (crucial for students who are experiencing academic failure).






Phonics

All students should read. Part of doing this is mastering the concepts of phonics. I use proven multisensory methods to teach phonics that include the following steps:

Special Needs

I have extensive experience teaching children and adults who have special needs including autism, learning disabilities like dyslexia, and ADHD. I am also sensitive to people's individual differences and work to support all their learning needs.


ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL classes on a volunteer basis, and also have extensive experience in tutoring English language learners. I can provide phonics, speaking, reading, writing and listening instruction to children and adults, and can also work toward tailor ESL lessons toward a specific goal such as writing a resume, vocabulary for a job or interview, or even exam preparation.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Literacy Intervention Specialist and work with students and their families to learn how to develop time management skills that maximize learning and promote effective, long-term behavior changes.
