I am a 2010 graduate of Brandeis University, originally from Florida, who is currently a medical student at New York University. My experience includes extensive high school, middle school, and elementary school tutoring in subjects as disparate as calculus, biology, writing, and French. I also have experience tutoring ADHD and developmentally delayed children in handwriting, reading, and math. I have also been editor-in-chief of my university's newspaper and was a copy editor before that, so I have excellent command of writing, reading, and proofreading skills, as well as the ability to effectively communicate them with others.
My teaching style emphasizes discussion and cooperation rather than rote instruction. I especially enjoy working on writing and reading comprehension skills, as well as instructing in topics I personally enjoy like biology, French, music, and calculus. We might go over an essay together and compare sample sentences the student writes, compose short stories in French, or choose samples from books by favorite authors to test reading comprehension in a more enjoyable way. I love communicating my own passion for math and helping students overcome challenges in understanding it. Students I have tutored have told me that they love learning with me because I enjoy the subject matter, enjoy their breakthroughs, and adjust my style to fit their needs; parents have told me that they appreciate my openness and willingness to adjust to each child's learning style. I am happy to provide references for these comments.
I look forward to working with your child and you for a great learning experience.
