Bonjour! Guten Tag! My name is Kannan and I'm an experienced foreign language teacher. I've taught both French and German at the middle and high school levels, and I've served as a teacher in urban, suburban, and rural communities. As a public school teacher, I have held certification in both New York and Virginia. I earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in German Studies, and have spent time living and studying in Germany, both during and after college. My French expertise comes from the Middlebury College French School and from my experience living and teaching in France. I spent one year in Marseille teaching English as a foreign language at the elementary school level—a grant position that I was awarded by the French government. I also hold a Master of Education in Foreign Language Education from the University of Virginia, where I spent time perfecting my language skills while becoming an expert teacher. During my time in graduate school, I completed a thesis and classroom research on the effect of language learning strategies on spoken proficiency.
Since leaving the classroom, I have returned to the field of education and have begun working independently as a private tutor. I have found that tutoring is the best way for me share my passion for languages and teaching with students of foreign languages. Beyond my experience as a teacher, I also lead a career as a professional classical singer, performing opera, oratorio, and choral music in the New York area and abroad.
