I've been teaching New York City high school students for the past 10 years. The population that I've been working with has been challenging. As a result however, I've developed several strategies to reach different type of learners. By relating topics that I'm teaching to things that are familiar to students' day-to-day experiences, I'm able to communicate complex aspects of many scientific topics. Given one-on-one time with any student, I can communicate the things he or she needs to understand for their coursework as long as they are willing to do their part as a student and work as well. As of this year, from the joint effort between the student and myself, I have a 100% pass rate with my tutoring students.
