I am a certified, experienced teacher (13 years' teaching experience, adjunct college professor, Orton Gillingham trained, Wilson Just Words Trained, New York State certified EMT, 2012 Teacher of the Year in my current position), and United Nations presenter, seeking to assist your student elementary, middle school through college. I have also recently completed Teachers College at Columbia, Readers Workshop training - it was amazing.

I have personally been a lifelong learner with a master's degree in teaching children technology and a minor, undergraduate degree in literature. In my current position as a middle school librarian and LA teacher, I have my finger on the pulse of what students like to read. Utilizing high interest materials and iPad technology, I can help reluctant readers and writers succeed. My most recent master's degree in educational administration provides me the insight into where education is heading in the future and expectations of student performance on high stakes testing. Speaking, phonics, reading, writing and reading recovery are integral to student success in all content areas. Allow me the opportunity to help your student develop the tolls to succeed.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I am currently a college professor specializing in a reading and writing intensive subject area offering. In that light, I know what schools are looking for and can assist students in attaining their reading potential. Being Orton Gillingham and Wilson trained, also gives me a leg up in assisting struggling readers, as well as effective readers, strategies for success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified general education teacher PreK-8 in the State of New Jersey with experience teaching kindergarten through grade eight and college level. I am a passionate educator, currently teaching middle school and and a college class, and tutoring students from Kindergarten to high school in the areas of reading and language arts both in isolation and as they relate to all other content areas. Good reading and writing skills are of critical importance in school and for your child's future success. To that end,I am also Wilson Just Words and Orton Gillingham trained. That coupled with 14 years of teaching experience, gives me both the training and experience to assist struggling readers and writers.

English

English Language Arts, middle school librarian/college professor specializing in reading and writing skills, test prep, and school success. Skills prep includes preparation for and determining important content in core subject areas. Orton Gillingham based instruction for reading decoding, encoding and comprehension skills with emphasis on fluency and expression through writing.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken ESL/ESOL graduate level classes during my Educational Administration certification. I have experience and an internship completed during the summer of 2010 with a northern New Jersey Summer School program and adult speakers in a northern New Jersey public library. Currently, I am the facilitator of a Chinese Cultural exchange club including participation in distance conferences with a Chinese School.

Grammar

I am currently a college professor specializing in a reading and writing intensive subject area offering. In that light, I know what schools are looking for and can assist students in attaining their ELA potential. Being Orton Gillingham and Wilson trained, also gives me a leg up in assisting struggling readers, as well as effective readers, strategies for success in reading, writing and grammar.

Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is currently an integral part of my middle school curriculum. Current students utilize this program for tri-fold brochures, website design, flyers and other business related skills.

Phonics

As I prepare for the 2014-15 school year, I find myself the reading recovery instructor at my middle school. To that end, I successfully completed Wilson's Just Words program (reading recovery for older students) and the intensive Orton Gillingham Multi-Sensory Education Program (for k-adult students) and I am ready to rock. Both programs are heavy on cultivating phonemic awareness and sound symbol relationships. I have also just completed Teachers College Readers' Workshop at Columbia University. With these intense training experiences, and my teaching experience in reading and writing skills, I feel confident I can help struggling readers and writers improve their fluency, comprehension, and expression.

Public Speaking

Public speaking goes hand-in-hand with presentation skills and technology; both a part of my daily curriculum for middle school and adults students. I currently teach fifth and seventh grade students how to compose and present to both other students and authentic audiences in a debate format. Instruction is in both single and group settings.

Reading

I am a teacher/librarian and college professor specializing in reluctant readers or those struggling with reading skills and comprehension. I utilize a mix of grassroots tried and true practices and methods with a mix of technology to encourage even the most reluctant of readers. I have also recently added my training in Orton Gillingham to my reading decoding and encoding arsenal while focusing specific attention to fluency and comprehension skills.

SAT Reading

I am currently a college professor specializing in a reading and writing intensive subject area offering. In that light, I know what schools are looking for and can assist students in attaining their reading potential. Being Orton Gillingham and Wilson trained, also gives me a leg up in assisting struggling readers, as well as effective readers, offering strategies for success.

Social Studies

During my studies in teacher education, I took classes in ancient civilizations, American History and religions of the world. Pre-K through eighth grade Social Studies is exactly that the study of society and cultures. It includes all aspects of our history, diversity, demographics and economy. Additionally, it includes how technology impacts our world today by allowing real time cultural exchange. These factors all contribute to tolerance and acceptance of other cultures and people. History is closely tied to language arts in that both require reading for understanding, in addition to expository and research writing skills.

Study Skills

As a school media specialist and teacher, this component is a critical skill and integral part of my curriculum. Skills include organization, determination of importance and preparation for various assessments and assessment modalities.

Writing

Reading and writing skills go hand in hand, and are critically important skills contributing to student success at all levels. By combining both skills with a grassroots approach, and including a technology based program, students can hone both important skills.
