My name is Barbara. I have always been a good student, particularly in science and math. I earned my BS in Chemistry and spent a few years in industry using my degree. After a while, I decided to go back to school and earn my MS in Education. I am currently certified to teach Chemistry 7 - 12 in New York State. I have a strong background in the other sciences and in math as well. In addition to teaching, I do some tutoring of middle and high school students for the last five years. Mainly, I work on lower level math skills they have not understood and mastered, homework help, or study skills. I have also helped many students prepare for the Regents in Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry), Science (Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry and Physics) and History (Global and US History). In addition to this, I also work to prepare students for the SATs and ACTs.

I believe that any student can be successful. The way to achieve this is to find how the individual student best learns and then tailor the lessons to that. I try and provide my students, both in the classroom and in tutoring, with a variety of ways to solve the same problem and learn the same concept. Each student is different and needs to learn and understand in a different way. By acknowledging those differences and working with the student's abilities, I believe that the student has a better chance of grasping the lesson and being able to apply it.

Algebra 1

Math is its own language and by the time one enters high school, it can be very confusing. Let me help you "translate" what the math is saying into simple English. In algebra 1, one of the most difficult issues is factoring. I teach many different ways to factor, depending on the student's ability and comprehension. Algebra 2

Geometry

Trigonometry

SAT Math

SAT Math section tests your abilities in arithmetic, algebra and geometry. The best way to prepare for this section is to learn strategies for test taking. I teach students a variety of different methods to solving each problem as well as different guessing strategies they can use if they do not know how to solve the problem. The best way to improve your score is to work on strategies to help you answer more questions correctly.

SAT Reading

SAT Reading is a logic test. The most important preparation you can do for this test is to improve your vocabulary. This will not only help in this section, but also with your writing portion. About 1/3 of your reading score is based on sentence completion and 2/3 is based on passage-based reading. A wide vocaulary will help with the sentence completions. I have experience in preparing students in this section and have a wide variety of strategies to use to answer these types of questions

SAT Writing

SAT Writing tests your knowledge of Standard Written English and how you use it. This will test your ability to write an essay in a very short amount of time. You need to be clear, precise, connected and well-organized as well as having a strong theme. The rest of this section is based on grammar rules. Physical Science

Physical science deals with earth science, chemistry and physics. These science are focuses on the physical world and how it interacts. My degree is in Chemistry, but I have a strong background in all sciences. I can help you to understand the physical science, whether you are a middle schooler, preparing for the state science test or a high schooler taking Earth Science. PSAT

The PSAT is generally taken by sophomores and Juniors mainly to prepare them for the SAT. The other purpose of this test is to determine the National Merit Scholarship students. The PSAT contains the same 3 sections as the SAT, but is much shorter. To prepare for this test, one would prepare for it like the SAT. I have much experience in preparing students for the SAT. There are a lot of strategies that a student can use on this type of test.

Study Skills

I have a Master's in Education from Mount Saint Mary College. For the last 5 years, I have worked part-time in private tutoring. I tutor many students who are struggling in school. I teach them skills that help them become more organized, manage time efficiently, study for test effectively, read and comprehend better, take better notes and understand their learning preferences and abilities. Swimming

Swimming is a passion of mine. From the time I was 6 years old until I entered college, I swam competitively for my town team. I also swam for my high school team at the same time. I have taken the MCATs twice and scored well both times. My scores for the science sections were 7 and above. My writing scores were also decent. Many of the topics covered on the MCATs are chemistry, which is my field of knowledge. I have experience in test preparation.

Organic Chemistry

I have my BS in Chemistry from Loyola University (formally Loyola College) in Maryland, where I graudated Cum Laude. My GPA for my chemistry classes was 3.5. I have a BS in Chemistry and a MS in Education. Since 2006, I have tutored many students in a variety of subjects. Beginning in May of each year, I work more with students who want to prepare for the Regents in June. I have prepared students in Integrate Algebra I, Geometry, Integrated Algebra II/Trigonometry, Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, US History, Global History and RCTs.
