To all students, from first through eighth grade, who want some help with a range of subjects, this is what I can offer: I graduated from Harvard University with a BA in English Literature quite some time ago but my language skills are sharp and I believe I can do what it takes in terms of basic grammar and sentence structure as well as the finer points of essay writing to bring you up to the level at which you should be performing.

From my more than seven years experience as a teacher at the Ravenswood Learning Center in Long Island City, where I helped to run an after-school homework help and enrichment program for students from the surrounding schools, I feel I can reach you and assist you regardless of your level.

As well as skill in ELA, I can offer solid competency in science, math and social studies (which I wish was still called history). While I am not a big fan of the NYC DOE's over-reliance on standardized testing as the way of measuring student achievement, we have little choice but to try and make it as painless an ordeal as possible; as much test prep as is needed and/or desired will be available for third grade and up.

I have many years of experience as a professional touring and recording musician (my main job for most of my life), and can offer instruction in guitar and bass guitar. At Ravenswood I organized a band and led sessions in songwriting which resulted in several exciting performances as well as providing a boost to language skills and the elevated cooperative abilities fostered by ensemble playing.

I look forward to working together.

Best Regards,

Ernie

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked for 7 years as the lead teacher at an after school program run under aegis of the Queens Public Library. There I have helped students in Kindergarten through 8th grade with their homework in a wide range of subjects. I feel confident in my skills and am especially effective working with individuals one on one. I have a BA in English Lit. from Harvard University, so Language Arts may be my greatest area of strength.

Guitar

I have been a professional musician for more than forty years, recording and touring worldwide with many different kinds of ensembles, from rock to modern classical. I am primarily a bassist, but I have enough facility on guitar to teach beginners and intermediate-level students. I have many works recorded on CD and vinyl form in different musical genres, from early New Wave group the Modern Lovers to current blues/jazz rock band Gods and Monsters fronted by guitar genius Gary Lucas. I have worked extensively with well-known artists such as Jerry Harrison, formerly of the Talking Heads.
