Hello potential students. My name is Chris and I have helped many students pass math courses they thought they would not be able to pass. I have tutored students at levels from arithmetic through algebra through calculus. I specialize in helping students suffering from math phobia. I use questions to find the students level of understanding. From there I bring the student's skills up to where they are needed for their class by explaining both how to solve the problem and what all the math means. Sometimes the explanation needs to be done multiple times, each different than the others until one resonates with the student.

As for my history and qualifications, I have a bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics, from the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. My concentration in both programs was math education. I have taught calculus and differential equations as a graduate student. I have taught discrete math, basic algebra, probability, and statistics as an adjunct instructor at Cardinal Stritch University. I have also tutored many students in algebra, geometry, statistics, and calculus. Math is like a ladder in that a poor teacher or experience at one level makes moving up to the next level more difficult. Problems in understanding at one level make advancing to the next level almost impossible. As I mentioned, my strength as a tutor lies in finding where the student's understanding ends so we can together build that next step in the ladder to success. Corny, but I find it is quite true.

Thanks,
Chris

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have helped high school students and adult learners do better in algebra classes and placement tests than they expected to do. I am also good at helping with math phobia if that is a problem.

Thanks,
Chris S.

Chess

I have coached elementary, junior high, and high school chess teams. My USCF rating in the mid 1800s puts me in the top 10% of all tournament players in the US. I have been playing tournament chess since 1972 and understand the history and culture of the game as well at moves and strategy.

Differential Equations

As a graduate student at the University of Texas - Austin I was a teaching assistant for differential equations. I ran the class lab, which basically was me answering questions from students about techniques and concepts they did not understand from the professor's lecture and demonstrating how to do various problems they had difficulty with. I also made an 'A' when I took the course as an undergrad.
