Hi, my name is Lauren! I am a Columbia University graduate (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa member) and am currently applying to medical school while pursuing a professional dance career. I majored in Neuroscience with a minor in Italian Literature. I was valedictorian of my High School. I studied abroad in Italy for a semester, and it is my second favorite place after New York. I love electronic music, Broadway, cinema, dogs, and high top sneakers!
I am experienced in tutoring SAT, ACT, SSAT, and all high school math and science subjects (AP, IB, honors, etc). I like to create a very relaxed environment and focus on the student and his or her questions and concerns. I try to first figure out the student's areas of weakness and then construct my lessons in an effort to improve them. I am available on weekday afternoons/evenings and weekend mornings/afternoons and am willing to travel within 20 minutes of my location.
I am a professional ballet dancer. I have been dancing since I was three years ago, and started pre-professional training in classical ballet when I was 12 years old. I used to commute into Manhattan in high school to train at the Joffrey Ballet School. I am currently dancing with a few companies in the city.
I have recently studied and taken the MCAT (summer of 2013). I studied for 2 months on my own, using multiple prep books and taking a practice MCAT almost everyday. I focused on learning the structure of the exam, and discovered many tips and strategies to help master it (timing, material, etc). Much of the test is about confidence, knowing how to approach each section before you start and not losing focus. I received a 32 on the exam (11 Physical Sciences, 11 Biological Sciences, 10 Verbal) which has allowed me to apply to medical schools across the country.
I took Organic Chemistry last year in my senior year at Columbia University. I received an A+ first semester and an A second semester. I self-taught much of Organic Chemistry due to difficulty with teachers, and I took an advanced lab during my first semester.
I attended a public school in New York, where I have received 90 or above on all of my regents exams.
I have been developing study skills since I was in high school. I pursued a professional dance career and would have limited time to do my homework and study. I learned how to ready quickly and figure out the best way that I could retain material. Some people use flashcards, some rewrite their notes, etc., and it took me a few years to optimize my study habits. It involves learning about organization, time-management, and concentration. I have studied on my own for both the SATs and the MCAT exam. I would take months studying for multiple hours a day, developing my own study program that I rigorously followed. Learning these skills are just as important as any other academic subject because they apply to every aspect of one's life.
