Hey there! My name is Stephanie. I graduated from Queens College with my BA in math. I believe there are many reasons why students do not do well in math. Some lack the mathematical foundation necessary to proceed forward, some are not motivated, and others have disabilities that interfere with the learning process. I have been tutoring math for over five years and have worked with many types of students: students ranging from pre-kindergarten age through college, students who hate math and have lost all hope, and students with a variety of disorders (ADD, dyslexia, visual impairments, autism, selective mutism). I am a firm believer that each student can succeed given the necessary environment. I will work hard with you or your children to help them succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have previously volunteered at a camp serving children who were diagnosed with autism. I have also volunteered through a program called Friendship Circle which allowed me to work one-on-one with a young child who was diagnosed with autism. I currently work with a young adult who is autistic and selectively mute on skills such as community integration and money management skills.
These experiences have made me well aware of the specific challenges an autistic child or adult may face.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have acted as a "homework-helper," helping children ages 7-12 with their homework. I also currently work at a math tutoring center where I am working with children as young as 5 years old.

Special Needs

Special needs is a very broad category. Over the years I have worked with students who were diagnosed with learning disorders, autism, aspergers, and selective mutism. In 2011, I also observed special ed classes while tutoring the students having difficulty keeping up with the session.
