Hello. My name is Charlie S. and I greatly enjoy helping students understand subjects that challenge them. I have a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Lewis and Clark College and a Bachelor's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon.

I am certified in New York State in Spanish, Grades 7-12, Special Education, and Elementary Education. I have eleven years of classroom teaching experience, including three years as a Spanish Teacher, three years as a Learning Disabilities Teacher, and one year as an ESL Teacher.

I currently work as a Migrant Specialist. In this capacity, I work with many students who do not have English as their primary language. As a consequnce, school can be very difficult for them. I work very hard to try and help them succeed in their studies.

Reading

I received my undergraduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Several of the classes in this program focused on reading. In addition, while pursuing certification in special education, I also was required to take several courses related to reading. I currently work with 20-25 migrant students in grades K-12. The majority of these students have a great deal of difficulty with reading.

Spanish

I have a total of five years of teaching experience as a Spanish Teacher. In addition, I am currently certified by New York State in Spanish. In my current position as a Migrant Specialist with BOCES, I work primarily with students from Mexico, whose first language is Spanish. Many of my students' parents do not speak English, and as a consequence, I have to communicate in Spanish on a daily basis.

GED

I have eleven years of classroom teaching experience. During my time as a classroom teacher, I was responsible for teaching all of the core subjects to my students. In my current position as a Migrant Specialist, I tutor students in high school math, social studies and science. In addition, I have worked with students on GED test preparation.

SAT Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Public Administration, as well as an additional 30 plus graduate hours in Special education. In my current position with BOCES as a Migrant Tutor, I work with high school students who are preparing for the SAT. Because they are not native speakers, they have difficulty with the reading portion of the SAT. In addition, I privately tutor students who are preparing for the SAT.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a B.A.in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon. I am certified in New York State for Nursery, Kindergarten, and grades 1-6. I have seven years of classroom teaching experience. In my current position as a Migrant Specialist, I work with approximately fifteen students in 5 different elementary schools.

Study Skills

While pursuing certification in the field of Learning Disabilities, there was an emphasis on the importance of the development of study skills for students with disabilities. Special Needs

I completed 30 graduate hours in the field of Learning Disabilities at the University of Oregon. In addition, I took 24 graduate hours in Special Education from Western Oregon State College in Monmouth, Oregon. I am certified in Special Education in New York State and have three years of classroom experience teaching students with special needs. In my current position as a Migrant Specialist, I work with 6-8 students with special needs.

ADD/ADHD

I took 30 hours of Graduate level courses in Learning Disabilities as an undergraduate at the University of Oregon and became certified in the State of Oregon as a Learning Disabilities teacher. I also spent 3 months as a student teacher in a classroom with special education students. In addition, I took 24 graduate hours in Sppecial Education at Western Oregon State College.

Dyslexia

I am New York State certified in special education. I received my training in Learning Disabilities at the University of Oregon. I was required to take 30 graduate hours in this field in order to earn certification. This training included several courses related to dyslexia.
