I am a certified elementary and special education teacher as well as a practicing artist and poet. I love language, art, and I have several years of experience working with children on the autism spectrum in home, school, and social skills group settings.

I am trained in ABA-style instruction (Verbal Behavior) for children with ASD, but I also have some experience with RDI. I have worked with children with severe behavioral issues and also children with multiple disabilities and I am comfortable addressing concerns that arise in the course of instructing students with these issues.

Additionally, I have also worked with ESL students, both adults and children, and participated in an ESL training program.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I believe I am qualified to tutor students with Autism based on both credentials and experience.

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Long Island University and am a New York State certified teacher of Students With Disabilities.

I recently worked as a substitute and then as a full-time classroom aide in a school for children with ASD. While employed at the school, I completed all in-house trainings on students with Autism, as well as an off-site training workshop in Verbal Behavior with Dr. Vincent Carbone of the Carbone Clinic. I also received on-the-job training in the classroom. I was assigned a student for one-to-one instruction and, under the supervision of the classroom teacher, I designed and implemented a learning program following guidelines of ABLLS and Verbal Behavior. I used various assessment tools in the course of my employment including VB-MAPP, ABLLS, and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale. I completed narrative reports and worked with the classroom teacher on IEP goals and objectives and quarterly reports. I also worked closely with OT/PT and Speech Therapists, as well as the Psychologist and Family Service Coordinator.

Additionally, I have experience working with children on the autism spectrum in a home setting, as I have provided childcare for several children with ASD.

Although I am new to tutoring, I expect that given this range of experience, my skill set will readily transfer to the tutoring setting and I will be a successful and effective tutor for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Special Needs

I believe I am qualified to tutor students with Special Needs based on both credentials and experience.

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Long Island University and am a New York State certified teacher of Students With Disabilities.

My student teaching experience included a self-contained BOCES classroom with children with a wide range of special needs.
