Hello, my name is Dr. Joe,

My background includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, along with a B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Tech. I have taught Statistics, Physics, Technical Writing, Seminar, Computer Science and all levels of Chemistry to over 2000 students at three major universities (Ohio State, UNC, Rutgers) and two smaller colleges (Gardner-Webb, Columbia-Greene). After 40 years in academics and industry, I am now retired.

Currently, I tutor students for the complete SAT and ACT Exams, including such topics as Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Writing, Math and Science. My specialties include the AP and SAT versions of Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Statistics. I also teach students how to organize and research major written assignments for a wide range of introductory subjects in the sciences and the humanities.

My strengths are that I have a natural ability to diagnose and target my student's learning issues. It has been my experience that successful learning does not depend on your age or aptitude as much as it does with your confidence and participation. All you need is some competent guidance to find your way.

Computer Science

I have a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill. I am familiar with Data Structures, Numerical Analysis, Database Systems, Computer Architecture, Networking, Operating Systems, Compilers, Design of Algorithms, and Programming in C, Pascal, Fortran, and UNIX.

Discrete Math

I have a Masters Degree in Computer Science, which applies Discrete Math. I have taught some Discrete and Combinatorial Math within my Statistics course. I am familiar with Set Theory, Relations and Functions, Inclusion and Exclusion, Boolean Algebra, Generating Functions, Recurrence Relations, Graph Theory and Properties of Trees.

When I taught college-level Chemistry, I included some environmental science. I am familiar with Ecosystems and their cycles as affected by Nutrients, Domestic and Industrial Pollution, Non-native species, Resources, Energy, Land Use, and the Human Population. I have also used simulation software to model ecosystems.

Linear Algebra

I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and my research required the use of Linear Algebra. I have had four courses in Linear Algebra, including graduate school. I am familiar with Gaussian Elimination, Simultaneous Linear Equations, Orthogonal Projections, Least Squares Approximation, Determinants, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, and Operations with Matrices.

Organic Chemistry

I have both tutored and taught Organic Chemistry in college, and I have used it extensively in my past research. This includes the structures and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, halides, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, amines, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Within these topics, I have taught how to use these compounds to devise synthetic road maps. Other areas include how to use NMR, IR, UV, and Mass Spectroscopy to deduce the structure and functional groups of organic compounds. My experience as a teacher and a tutor of Organic Chemistry has enabled me to devise simpler ways to understand these concepts.

I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a Master's Degree in Computer Science. I have taught college-level Probability and its Statistical applications. This includes Permutations, Combinations, Conditional and Independent Probability, Discrete Random Variables, along with the use of Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian, and Chi-Square Distributions.

I have three years of SSAT and ISEE experience with another national tutoring vendor. Currently, I am active with tutoring two young students for the upper level SSAT. This includes the Verbal, Reading and the two Quantitative (Math) sections.

AWESOME Tutor!!! Absolutely awesome!!! Really knew how to relate, diagnose and help my son! I give Joe the best recommendation that I can give. His mannerism is fantastic, returns calls quickly, and knows how to relate to teens. There is not one complaint I can offer, and for me, I am extremely fussy. ...
