My name is Janet, and I have been a teacher and/or tutor of ESL continuously since 1972. In my long and joyous teaching career, I have also taught and tutored TOEFL Prep., all GED subjects and prep., and test prep. for NYS Regents exams in English III, Earth Science, Biology, and French. I have always loved languages and travel. I studied French for 5 years in MS and HS, studied comparative Slavic languages and German in College, and have picked up some serviceable Spanish during the three years that I taught ESL in Mexico City. I hold Permanent Certification in ESL K-12 in New York State, and while I currently teach ESL to elementary school children in grades 3-5 during the school year, I enjoy returning to teaching older kids in grades 6-12 each summer. I am also currently tutoring ELA and Math in our local school's after school program.
For five years I was Girls' Dorm Resident for a private international high school in Ithaca, NY as well as being a full-time ESL teacher for that school I enjoyed that job, and all my students, very much. Sometimes I was asked to teach a class in remedial math or French I or Russian I if any students needed it. One summer, I also was asked to teach a crash course in basic Economics. That year, I decided to reintroduce a yearbook to the school, as the photos of trips, classes, and student good times were too precious not to be shared.
I have extensive experience teaching adults, as well, in a variety of settings. I have taught GED, Citizenship, and English for Special Purposes in a Chinatown storefront, at State Hospitals in NYC, in community colleges, in a private college in the South Bronx, and even to Port Authority ESL students from Wall Street Banks and conference participants from Japan and Indonesia to Port Authority workshops held at the Language Institute on the 55th floor of the former 2 World Trade Center.
