I love language! I am fully bilingual, and I have credentials in both English and French. I have a Master's degree in French from New York University and NY State French teacher certification for grades 7-12. I have also lived and studied in France at the Alliance Francaise Institute and the University of Paris at the Sorbonne.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Communications/Journalism from Hofstra University with a minor in English literature. I have over 15 years as a full-time coordinator of tutoring services for CUNY and as a part-time college instructor of English and ESL. I also have experience as an editor and writer in English.

I tutor English/ESL reading and writing from primary school through dissertation support for PhD candidates, and I tutor French for primary and secondary students between levels 1-4. I am available for help with both written and spoken English and French for homework help and test prep with an emphasis on study skills and learning strategies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My expertise in English was honed during the completion of my undergraduate minor in English literature. I also teach college courses in writing and English as a Second Language. Since writing (and reading) are my preferred pastimes, they are skills that I constantly use and refine. Finally, I do freelance editing and copywriting which requires me to remain abreast of the standards and conventions of correct language usage.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching college level ESL writing courses, and I have had graduate coursework in ESL teaching methods as part of my teacher certification program. In addition, as a result of studying French as a second language, I have an empirical understanding of the process of developing fluency in a second language. This experience gives me the ability to predict the difficulties that students have when they are learning English so that I can plan instructional strategies to help them overcome these challenges.

French

My expertise in French was developed in France where I lived and studied at both the Alliance Francaise and the University of Paris at the Sorbonne. I have a master's degree in French from New York University, and I am certified by the New York State Department of Education to teach French on the secondary school level. Documentation of these credentials can be provided upon request.

GED

I have over 15 years of experience teaching students and training teachers to further the educational growth of young students, college students as well as adult learners. Not only have I provided instruction in language-based subjects such as writing, reading comprehension for all subjects, and ESL, but I also teach effective learning strategies and study skills, which forms the basis of my test preparation curriculum for exams like the GED, SAT, and college entrance and placement exams.

Reading

As a Learning Center Coordinator for over 15 years, I know the importance of reading across the curriculum; it is the basis of academic learning in ALL subjects. However, not all students learn in the same way. So throughout my career I have developed a wide range of reading strategies to accommodate the learning differences of many types of students. Once reading becomes less of a struggle, learning becomes more of a pleasure!

SAT Reading

To do well on this part of the SAT, you must possess or develop three key skills: 1) contextual deduction from embedded clues in the passages, 2) Logical relationship identification from sequence, punctuation and cue words, and 3) Etymological inferencing from word families, roots and pre- and suffixes. These are all skills that I teach in the SAT review course that I teach on Saturday mornings. I am familiar with the format and the best tactical approach to use when taking it.

SAT Writing

I have current as well as past experience teaching an SAT prep course. I teach college writing courses for both native as well as non-native speakers. Finally, my foreign language studies give me a thorough understanding of how language works in terms of grammar, syntax and vocabulary - all of which are integral parts of the SAT.

Writing

I have exemplary skills in writing and reading. My college major in journalism and minor in English literature are two key factors in the development of these important literary abilities, and my experience as a freelance writer and editor are further indications of my talents. In addition, I have over 15 years of experience teaching college courses in writing for both native speakers and ESL students. I have also taught GED preparation for adults which includes writing. Finally, I possess NY State teacher certification.

Great tutor. — Lynda is an excellent tutor. She goes above and beyond her duties to make sure my son understands all there is to know about writing. She even assisted him in picking out a book from the library to help improve writing through reading. My son had an essay to write for his class and was able to come up with ideas quickly using Lynda's format. Thanks Lynda. Keep up the good work. ...
