Elementary and Middle School Tutor, Grades K-8

Currently, I am a middle school English teacher with a passion to see students gain high achievement while enjoying their learning experience. I always had strong academic roots. In my high school, George Washington in Denver, I was ranked no. 15 in the list of the top thirty graduating seniors. My high school selected me among a small number of high school graduates to be a summer school teacher for middle school students in Breakthrough Collaborative. Following this, I went on to college and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies and an ETA Diploma in Teaching from Zion Bible College. I have been teaching middle school for three years, and I love it! I help students improve in the areas of math, geography, grammar, spelling, proofreading, editing, and literature. I also am skilled in critically assessing papers and am knowledgeable with MLA formatting.

Vocabulary

Students will develop current grade-level vocabulary. I provide comprehension activities such as analogy questions, the study of word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and homophones. Students will also incorporate new vocabulary in writing activities.

Grammar

I develop students in the grammatical rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Students learn the various conjugations and tenses of verbs and learn to distinguish regular verbs from irregular verbs. Students learn correct sentence structure and how to avoid common pitfalls such as fragments, run-on sentences, and incorrect voice. Students will develop their writing skills through proofreading, editing, and draft development.

Microsoft Word

Students will understand how to use the various settings within Microsoft Word. They will be able to properly format a paper, and will learn the correct methods of typing.

Reading

Students will develop skills in comprehension and analysis of passages. They will build vital skills in inference, context clues, and vocabulary. Students will be able to write summaries and paraphrase reading materials. They will also build retention of material, dictation skills, and fluency in oral reading.

Writing

Students will learn proper sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation usage. They will become familiar with proofreading, editing, and revision. They will learn proper outlining and formatting for papers. They will know how to write various styles of essays as well as correct referencing and citation for papers.

Geography

Students will learn how to properly read and interpret various maps. They will understand factors influencing geography such as weather, climate, landforms, and natural resources. They will study physical geography, human geography, and environmental geography.

English

Students will develop reading skills through comprehension questions, learning inference, and using context clues.

Literature

Students will examine grade appropriate literature and will identify key elements of their books such as the setting, theme, and plot. Students will understand flashback, foreshadowing, irony, and important literary devices such as similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and personification. Students will examine and compare the biographies and writing styles of authors. I will also provide assistance in preparing book reports.

Proofreading

Students will learn all standard proofreading symbols and will develop their editing skills by correcting sample sentences and paragraphs containing various errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Students will revise proofread material in various drafts.

Spelling

Students will understand general spelling rules in relation to vowels and consonants. They will be able to identify common prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. They will identify commonly misspelled and mispronounced words.

Elementary Math

I cover various topics such as grouping, graph and chart analyses, the order of operations (PEMDAS), word problems, fractions, decimals, integers, equations, factors, percentages, and problems involving money.

Elementary (K-6th)

For one year, I assisted in grades K-6 and provided services building students' vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, and math levels. I have developed and implemented games reinforcing students' knowledge of these subjects, employing a variety of methods such as music, art, and exercise.
