ADD/ADHD

I am a Literacy Intervention Specialist and work with students and their families to learn how to develop time management skills that maximize learning and promote effective, long-term behavior changes. Using hands-on, visual materials that are a unique match for individuals with ADHD or other executive functioning deficits, students learn strategies and personalized time management solutions such as: how the development of the brain affects our ability to manage our time and get things done, how to thwart procrastination by creating the big picture of a large project,
how to use specific tools to develop time management skills, how to break down complex projects into small doable parts and plan the time to do the parts, and create a customized student binder for paper management.

Dyslexia

I have several years' experience working with dyslexic students of all ages. My undergraduate education in communicative disorders, as well as my training toward certification in the Orton-Gillingham Approach (which is proven to work well with dyslexic students) have provided an excellent foundation.

To work with students who have dyslexia, I use proven multi-sensory methods to teach phonics that include the following steps:

- phonemic awareness: learning individual sounds and blending them into words
- phoneme/grapheme correspondence: which sounds are represented by which letter(s)and how to blend those letters into single-syllable words
- 6 types of syllables of the English language: If students know what type of syllable they're looking at, they'll know what sound the vowel will make
- Probabilities and Rules of English: We can't escape rules in phonics, but I can make it more fun and lively!
- Roots and Affixes, & Morphology: expanding a student's vocabulary can be as simple as learning a few popular Latin word roots and add-ons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have extensive experience teaching a variety of subjects to children in elementary school: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and learning skills. I tap into all of the different ways that children acquire new concepts and ideas through direct, explicit instruction that is multisensory, fun, individualized, and emotionally supportive (crucial for students who are experiencing academic failure).






ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL classes on a volunteer basis, and also have extensive experience in tutoring English language learners. I can provide phonics, speaking, reading, writing and listening instruction to children and adults, and can also work toward tailor ESL lessons toward a specific goal such as writing a resume, vocabulary for a job or interview, or even exam preparation.

I have extensive experience teaching children and adults who have special needs including autism, learning disabilities like dyslexia, and ADHD. I am also sensitive to people's individual differences and work to support all their learning needs.


Writing

Writing can be a daunting task for many. I use a multisensory teaching approach to guide students through the writing process. We begin with a barebones sentence and will proceed through the various stages of writing.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
