I have been in the education profession for over 25 years. My tutoring experience began in my college days. Along with my private tutoring practice I contract out to Sylvan Learning Center. During this time I have developed some unique perceptions and methods to bring complex scientific concepts into real world application.
My life has not been only academics. I have had employment in several occupations and bring a wealth of background knowledge to the learning process.
My teaching philosophy is guided by the answers to the following three questions:
1. What is a Teacher? A teacher's role is to be a guide. A Sherpa to the academic mountain you are climbing. I will do everything possible to assist you, but you still must work to climb the mountain.
2. What is Science? Science is a language, learn the jargon. Science is an explanation of our observations. The goal is to make the connection between the real world and the concept. This in-turn leads to the understanding and application of concepts into critical thinking skills.
3.What is a Science Teacher? This question must be reworded into "What is a Science Specialist?" Solving puzzles, looking at things differently, playing and having fun. These are qualities of a science specialist.

I am a Science Specialist. I do one thing, Science, only Science, and I do it very well while having a great time.
I look forward to meeting you soon.
Respectfully,

Mr. S. (Dynamic Science Geek)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

One of my all time favorite subjects.

Biology

Everyone likes biology. Since our youth we explore the world around us. We look at birds, flowers and trees. We hold earthworms and feel the water and breeze on our skin. We smell flowers or the odor of burning wood. We view life constantly. Biology is simply looking for connections between our observations.

Chemistry

Chemistry is center of ALL other sciences. Think of a spoke wagon wheel, chemistry is the hub and all other disciplines join there. Chem is very reliant on math and common sense.

Physical Science

I have taught Physical Science at the secondary level for 18 years. I am very well versed in the subject.

Regents

I have been teaching the NYS living Environment Regents for at least 10 years. This year, I will be preparing students for the NYS Chemistry regents.

Great Tutor — Pete gave me tools and hints to help me pass my chemistry exam. He showed me how valuable the reference tables are and how many answers can come from them. Even though I only met with Pete about 6 times, I feel I learned more with him then my chemistry teacher. Pete made all that information make more sense. I am much more confident going into my exam then before. Thank you Pete. You know your stu ...
