I have spent over 18 years in New York City public school classrooms and at Sullivan County Community College helping students achieve their full potential in a variety of subjects. I teach kids; the subject matters less. I have experience working with students in 7th grade through college. My education started in Jamaica and ended in New York City where I became an American citizen.
I have learned from my experience to listen to students and to respect their needs. I have taught English language and literature with a special emphasis on writing. My approach to essay writing is to teach analysis and outlining. Students need to become more self-confident; they just have to tap into their own ideas and learn how to become simple, clear, and cogent. Sentence structure and grammar form a part of those three concepts.
I have mainly taught high school and college English. My specialty area was the plays and poetry of William Shakespeare. I experienced great satisfaction dealing with students with demonstrated weaknesses in either their writing abilities or in reading comprehension. My passing rate on state mandated tests always approached 100%.
Besides teaching English, I also taught World History, SAT Preparation, American History. I hold a New York State Teacher's certificate for English. My undergraduate degree is from the City University of New York at Brooklyn College.
I offer a firm grasp of literature, grammar, and writing expertise to ease a student through those difficult times when one-on-one tutoring is the best option for your child. I know what today's public school teachers expect of their students. I have been there myself. Together we can make a difference in your child's life.
Because of my experience in both the high school and college setting, I can offer my assistance to students at any level. Let's work together to create a positive learning framework for your child!
