I am a former Wall Street quant with degrees in Math, Computer Science and Finance. I have been tutoring since my days on the Math Team at Stuyvesant HS. I was a high school teacher for a brief time and, more recently, I taught Probability and Statistics at Stony Brook University for a few years, where I received the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

I believe that learning mathematics is about understanding important concepts, not memorizing a bunch of formulas, and that obtaining the right answer is less important than trying to understand a problem and devising a method to solve it, even if that method isn't what the teacher is looking for.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I have a Masters Degree in Applied Math & Statistics. I taught an undergraduate course in Probability & Statistics 7 times from 2005-2008. I passed the first actuarial exam with a perfect 10.

Logic

I received a grade of A in both "Introduction to Logic" and the more difficult course "Symbolic Logic" as an undergraduate. As a graduate student, I taught a recitation section of "Discrete Structures" (a computer science course in which logic plays a very important role).

Statistics

I taught "Survey of Probability and Statistics" (AMS 310) at Stony Brook University for 3 years, receiving the 2008 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Magician! — Steve is a magician. My daughter had struggled with math for many years, and she had worked with many different tutors, to dismal results. Although she was virtually failing her statistics course as a college freshman, Steve pulled a rabbit out of a hat and taught her the basic principles so that she actually understood them. She wound up with a B- for the course, and I couldn't be happier! ...
