Looking for an experienced tutor who has helped both struggling and more successful students at the middle school, Regents, AP, and college levels to raise their history grades and ace their cumulative exams? Is your teacher accommodating your learning style? Do you have special needs that are not being met by your classroom teacher?
Do you need help with college or graduate school admissions, whether finding excellent fit schools, brainstorming and refining admissions essays, filling out applications, or preparing for interviews?
Since earning a master’s degree in social studies and humanities education at Columbia U., I have worked one-on-one with numerous students. Under my guidance, students have dramatically raised their social studies course grades (from a C or F to an A+). All of my students have passed their history Regents with a 78+; almost all earn 92+. AP and college students who follow my study method have also done quite well. In addition, I have helped several college students with their research papers. I draw upon a wide variety of materials, customized to fit student needs. In addition to tutoring, I have helped students struggling with a college or graduate school personal statement to gain admission to their top choices.
Before becoming a teacher and tutor, I worked as a professional researcher and market strategist, so I've had lots of practice in reading comprehension and persuasive writing. While studying history and international affairs at Georgetown U., I conducted policy research for members of Congress. After graduation, I worked for the University of Cambridge's publishing house, at a national public policy organization, where I also supervised and trained research interns, and at the College of William & Mary. For many of those years, I also interviewed and evaluated admissions candidates for Georgetown U. In 2012-13, I conducted research for a prominent college admissions consultant and author.
Because I am now focusing solely on tutoring and admissions consulting, I can accommodate your busy schedule. Unlike many tutors, I am willing to come to your home, if that is better than a local library or coffee shop.
I would love to help you maximize your success in class and/or in the admissions frenzy! Thank you for considering my services!
I am experienced in tutoring 7th/8th grade Social Studies, NYS Regents (11th grade) U.S. History, AP U.S. History, and IB History of the Americas.
Not only did I earn a top score on my AP and take a few American History classes as a Georgetown undergraduate, my graduate coursework at Columbia included a comprehensive review of American History and instruction specifically on teaching American History.
After graduating from Georgetown, I was asked to interview and evaluate freshmen applicants to my alma mater. Eventually, after serving as an internship coordinator, I figured out my graduate degree goals and chose Columbia. Following grad school, I worked for Johns Hopkins CTY, started to tutor successfully, and taught on LI, but was encouraged to consider becoming a college admissions consultant. As a result, I spent a year conducting research for and learning the business from a prominent college admissions consultant and author before going out on my own. My clients last year were accepted by excellent colleges and universities, including Johns Hopkins, Maryland, NYU Stern, Maryland, Penn State, and Wisconsin.
Looking for a trained and experienced literacy (reading and writing) instructor at the 9-12 level?
This will be my third year preparing students for the ELA portions of the ACT and SAT, as well as my second year preparing students for the new Common Core grade 11 English exam and for the GRE.
If your student is taking AP English Literature, please consider my services as well. An avid reader, I aced the AP English Literature exam and continued to study literature from a variety of cultures in college. I have also tutored students taking the AP English Language exam.
Before becoming a tutor, I retook the SAT twice, scoring in the high 700s in both Critical Reading and Writing. All of my students' test scores have risen under my tutelage.
Are you looking for help with AP European History, Western Civ. I & II at college, or a European History elective? Look no further! As the recipient of a 5 on the AP and the writer of a college thesis on 19th century Central Europe, I have extensive knowledge to draw upon while helping you develop even better study skills, ace your essays, and make sense of all those details.
Whether you take human geography or physical geography, in college or as a high school elective (AP or non-AP), I can help you, so long as its not a GIS course. Geography is one of my loves. At Georgetown, I was one of the few to test out of the required freshmen geography course, then helped some of my friends. At Cambridge, I assisted with advanced geography texts. For three summers, I taught an intensive high school level geography course for Johns Hopkins.
I have experience tutoring U.S. Government and teaching International Relations and Comparative Government courses. As a former Congressional intern, Congressional employee, and staff member at a public policy organization, I am quite familiar with how our own government works! In addition, my college minor in International Affairs included coursework on the U.S. government, on democratization efforts around the world, on political philosophy, and on several other forms of government, both past and present. While at Columbia, I also took a course on the US Constitution.
I have worked with students taking Regents Global History I, Regents Global History II (especially as they review for the cumulative exam), and Regents U.S. History. Those failing the course before we worked together raised their grades substantially and went on to pass their Regents exams with a 78+.
One of the most important tasks when providing tutoring is to identify the best study techniques for a particular student. Not only do I have experience helping Regents and AP students to improve their social studies study skills and raise their grades, during graduate school I was trained in a variety of successful methods to use when learning and trying to remember historical information. This training and experience enables me to help each of my students identify their most beneficial study technique(s).
I have more than 5 years experience successfully tutoring 9th and 10th grade students in Regents Global History (I & II) and AP World History (I & II) throughout the year, as well as preparing students specifically for the Regents and/or AP exams. I can also provide assistance with the introductory college World History survey.
My own undergraduate and graduate coursework included several World History courses, allowing me to draw upon extensive subject knowledge while helping you to develop better study skills, make sense of all the details, and ace your essays.
I can help you to write better history essays (DBQ, FRQ, thematic, CCOT, Comparative, etc.); research, format, and analyze data for research papers (history, government, or psychology); and write school admissions statements. My research, analysis, and writing skills were honed at Georgetown and Columbia, plus in a few extra graduate courses at William & Mary.
Resourceful and Knowledgeable — Although our lessons have been through the phone lately, Andrea continues to be a great tutor. I recently took my AP US History exam and needed help with the essays. Although I only needed help on the essays, she sent me tons of links on how to improve my writing and lots of review for the AP. Thanks to her, I think I easily got a 4 or 5. Also, she has mailed hard copies of resources for me on sev ...
