Hello students and parents. My name is Rebecca and I moved to the Hudson Valley area in the beginning of 2012. I have my teaching certifications in NY state in general and special education birth -grade 6 with a major in English. I just completed my Master's program through the University of Phoenix for Teacher Leadership in February 2013. I am also considering taking my Content Specialty Test in English to teach high school English.

I had the great opportunity to live in Japan for three years while my husband finished his service to our country as a Marine. This gave me opportunities to become culturally diverse and work with students from many backgrounds.

I am currently a substitute teacher in Highland Central School District as well as at West Point Elementary and Middle School's. I am seeking full time employment in a school district in the area, but as you know the market for teaching is tough right now.

I hold NYS teaching certifications for Students with Disabilities- birth to grade 2 and grades 1-5. Due to my undergraduate studies, I have been in various settings and worked with a plethora of students with special needs. My student teaching was in a severe setting serving children with disabilities ranging from Aspergers, Autism, ADHD, Emotional Disturbances, etc. After graduating I was a transitional aide for two students with special needs. One a kindergarten student in need of a switch from an inclusion classroom to self-contained. I worked with him for four months. The most recent student I worked with had cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound, otherwise needing assistance for physical needs. I was with her for seven weeks. I have also done extensive research on accommodating students with special needs. My wide range of experiences as well as versatility gives me unique characteristics and qualifications in handling students with special needs.

Due to my undergraduate studies, I have been in various settings and worked with a plethora of students with various needs. My student teaching in KG/1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th helped me develop the core knowledge for teaching various ages. After graduating, I started substitute teaching (for 2 years) and was able to see even more ages. I was a transitional aide for two students with special needs. I also taught Language Arts and Reading to 6th grade while living in Japan. I have experience with vast cultures and customs which helps me understand more of my students. Reading

A huge factor in helping students with reading comprehension is the development of vocabulary. In order to understand and be able to analyze a piece of literature, one must understand the words they are reading. This is one of the areas that I touch upon with reading comprehension. Here are some of the other areas I will be focusing on developing: activating prior knowledge, working on supporting details, figuring out what the main idea of the literature is, creating summaries of what has been learned, what is the author's purpose, understanding key elements of the characters whether major or minor, cause and effect, fact and opinion, inferences, figurative language, figures of speech, and sequencing are among some.
I like to focus on teaching these areas using various genres , graphic organizers, and above all, creative fun means to help keep the student's interest peeked. I am creative in my assignments and will use a different genre each story. I like to start with a genre of interest so the student feels comfortable with my learning style. However, I like branching off into many genres because one, a student needs to be able to read all genres for understanding, and two because if a student had never been exposed to all the various genres, they don't know if they are missing something they like.
Reading is a way of journeying around the worlds of the imagination and I hope to make my students enjoy themselves.

Spelling

Spelling has rules which if learned can help students make an educated spelling of an unknown word. Using appropriate techniques per grade, I will help students learn these techniques and develop a love for words using various means such as songs, puzzles, and other games where appropriate.

Study Skills

Study Skills are important in a student's success in school. Learning what type of learning style the student has (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, or visual) will help me determine how to teach the student what study style works best for them. Another aspect of study skills I will touch on is organizational skills, how to write down and organize key information, keeping their notes in order, and writing and managing due dates are all important skills that can encourage them to take ownership of their studies. Other strategies I would like to incorporate over time are review of materials, highlighting key points, summarizing material for comprehension, asking questions, time management, prioritizing tasks, and stress and anxiety management. These things and more can help a student develop better study skills in order to be successful in school.

Swimming

I am qualified to teach someone to swim because I was on the swim team for my four years of high school. I also was on my college swim team for two years. I am an avid swimmer and have taught several people to swim before. I swimming for exercise as often as I can, strokes including free style, back stroke, breast and butterfly. I wear goggles and a cap and I also know how to dive off a board and do a flip turn which will help people if they are looking to swim distances.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary development is key in helping a student learn to read and comprehend what they are reading. Understanding vocabulary in reading and in all subjects helps the student do better. I intend on helping students learn vocabulary for their grade level as well as help them with their class vocabulary. Various fun assignments will be used as informal assessments to track their progress.

Writing

Being an English major, I have written many papers. I have also helped develop 6th grade student's writing abilities while teaching overseas. From these two experiences I have developed an organized way of putting papers together which has helped many already in their writing process. Whether it be tutoring young elementary students, student writing beginner essays in middle and high school, or essays on the college level, I enjoy helping all.
