I have extensive experience tutoring and coaching all ages from elementary school students through college age students. I've done official tutoring work through my college as well as outside tutoring work. One of the main things I focus on is developing an active interest in their work and building up the confidence that they are capable of doing it. In my years of tutoring I have found that it is all too easy for a tutor with the best intentions to help a student with, for example, a practice problem by essentially doing the problem for them when the student starts to struggle at various parts of the solution process. I make an active effort to avoid this whenever possible and try to get my students to develop solutions of their own.

As a tutor in Math and Physics, I believe that the best way to learn is by doing. When broaching a topic I normally begin with a sample problem (or problems) that illustrates the topic at hand, and I try to get my student to understand every aspect of the solution process, and not only what to do at various stages in the problem but why. I then introduce similar problems to the student and encourage the student to solve them him/herself, with help given as needed but being careful not to do all the work for the student. I increase the difficulties of problems as seems appropriate.

During all this, I try to keep the atmosphere comfortable and informal, keeping the stress level under control and encouraging students to ask any and all questions they have.

Calculus

In addition to getting a 5 on the AB calculus exam in high school and an A in calculus 2 and 3 in college, my physics background included the constant usage and application of calculus over my entire college career. Also, I was a calculus tutor and grader to college students for two years.

Elementary Math

I have a comprehensive and well practiced background in mathematics from my degree in physics. In addition, I volunteered in a local elementary school near my college in which I taught math one hour every week to fifth graders for two years, where I worked from students of all ability levels, from gifted students to students with moderate learning disorders, including students in the middle.

Elementary Science

I have a strong background in science. I volunteered in a 5th grade science classroom for two years.

Football

I was a football lineman, playing offensive and defensive line from 5th grade through high school and defensive line for 2 years at the D3 level. I have 3 summers' experience coaching football at the middle school level, mainly conditioning drills and technique drills.

Linear Algebra

I have completed a semester's worth of Linear Algebra coursework from a summer class at Columbia University. I received an A in the course. The course included matrix manipulation, solutions to systems of linear equations and an in depth of vector spaces.

Precalculus

I worked two years as a calculus tutor in my school's "Math and Science skills center". In addition to my normal calculus students, I often worked with students in the school's precalculus preparation course.

Probability

I have taken probability in college. Additionally, I have been preparing for the P/1 actuarial exam for the last month, the first test to qualify as an actuary and essentially a difficult and comprehensive probability exam, giving me more recent practical experience.
